Spirometry

Medical abbreviation:

None

Type:

Respiratory function test

Definition:

Spirometry is sometimes referred to as lung function tests. The test involves blowing as fast (or on some occasions slowly) as one can, into a mouth piece, until the lungs are completely empty. The mouth piece is connected to a computer which measures your lung capacity and function. Normally, the entire visit should only last 5 to 10 minutes.

When would I need this test?

Spirometry is used to help diagnose chronic causes of breathlessness. This can be conditions such as Asthma, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary fibrosis and many other conditions which affect the way we breathe.

Important

If you are currently using inhalers, it is important you take these with you to your Spirometry test, as they may wish to perform measurements before and after you use your inhaler.

Risks

Spirometry is a low risk procedure; however it may not be suitable for the following patients:

  • Recent heart attack
  • Recent Stroke
  • Recent eye surgery
  • Recent abdominal surgery
