Medical abbreviation:
EMG
Type:
Electrophysiology
Definition:
EMGs use electrodes to measure the natural electrical activity in your nerves and muscles. This is done to make sure that they are functioning normally.
When would I need this test?
EMGs are used for the diagnosis of both nerve and muscle disease. Diagnosis of muscle disorders includes conditions such as motor neurone disease, myasthenia gravis and muscular dystrophy. The EMG can also be used to diagnose conditions where nerves are damaged, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, motor neurone disease and many other conditions which effect how nerves transmit electrical impulses.
