Echocardiogram

Medical abbreviation:

ECHO

Type:

Ultrasound

Definition:

This is an ultrasound scan done of the heart, similar to how a scan is done to look at a baby in the womb. The scan can be done by rubbing the probe over the chest or occasionally by placing the probe in the oesophagus (the gullet).

When would I need this test?

Echocardiograms are requested by doctors to evaluate how the chambers of the heart are beating and to assess any damage to the heart valves. If you have recently had a heart attack or suffer with heart failure then this test is often requested. The test is also used in patients who have symptoms of collapse or who have suffered a stroke. ECHO’s may also be done in newborns or prior to birth looking for congenital heart disease.
