Arthroscopy

Medical abbreviation:

None

Type:

Direct view and surgical Intervention

Definition:

Is a test preformed using an endoscope (a tube with a camera connected to a monitor). The camera is inserted into a joint via an incision. The test can be carried out under general, local or spinal anaesthesia. Arthroscopy is used as both a diagnostic and treatment modality. A second incision can be used for small surgical instruments.

When would I need this test?

Orthopaedic surgeons will use arthroscopy for diagnostic purposes when X-rays and MRI have failed to help make a diagnosis. Arthroscopy is also used to remove and repair cartilage damage and repair ruptured ligaments. Common joints examined and treated this way include the knee and shoulder.

Risks

Complications are not common, those that might occur (less than 1%) are:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Excessive swelling
