Computed Tomography

Medical abbreviation:

CT Scan

Type:

Imaging

Definition:

A computer generated three-dimensional image of your internal anatomy using x-ray radiation. The patient normally lies down and is passed through a donut shaped scanner, the appropriate part of the body being scanned.

When would I need this test?

A CT is usually requested when greater imaging detail is required than that provided by simple radiographs (x-rays). Common types of CT scan, include scanning the head, chest, abdomen and pelvis. This is often done to look for bleeding, complex fractures, tumors and deep abscesses.
