Definition:

This is a blood test that looks at hormone levels being produced by both the thyroid gland and pituitary gland. Thyroid hormones are crucial in controlling the rate of chemical reactions in the body.

When would I need this test?

The test is used to look for an under or over active thyroid gland. Symptoms that may suggest under activity include, weight gain, dry hair, feeling cold, constipation, heavy periods and depression. Symptoms suggestive of over activity include, weight loss, anxiety, palpitations, feeling hot all the time, diarrhoea, and infrequent or very light periods.
