Definition:

This is a special enzyme found in the bile ducts and is elevated when people drink alcohol excessively or there is blockage of the bile ducts.

When would I need this test?

GGT is often requested as part of a routine health screening, or when there are concerns of bile duct blockage or liver damage (liver function tests). GGT is particularly sensitive to levels of alcohol consumption and can be used to assess excessive alcohol consumption, along with other blood tests.
