Legal Classification of Medication

POM

Strontium ranelate can only be obtained in accordance with a prescription given by an appropriate practitioner and therefore the legal status of the medication is prescription only medication (POM).

Formulations

Strontium ranelate is available as yellow granules. Each sachet contains 2g of strontium ranelate.

Indications

Strontium ranelate is used in the treatment of thin and weak bones (osteoporosis). The medication reduces the risk of bone fracture particularly in women who have passed their menopause.

How does it work?

The bones of the skeletal system are continually being reformed by cells called osteoclasts which break down bone cells and osteoblasts which form bone cells. Strontium ranelate stops osteoclasts from breaking down calcium from the bones this helps to maintain bone density. Women who have passed their menopause have decreased levels of oestrogen this increases the activity of osteoclasts.

How is it taken?

The recommended dose is one 2g sachet once daily. The granules from the sachet should be mixed with water before administration; the granules should be stirred until evenly mixed. The suspension should be consumed immediately at bedtime.

The absorption strontium ranelate is reduced by particular foods and milk and therefore it should be taken between meals preferably 2 hours before or after taking food.

Pregnancy and Breast feeding

Strontium ranelate should be avoided in pregnancy and breast feeding as studies have shown toxicity.

Contra-indications

Strontium ranelate should not be used in patients with severe renal impairment and allergies to any of the ingredients.

Side-effects

The following are side-effects of the medication: 

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Blood clot
  • Headache
  • Eczema
  • Abdominal pain

Severe allergic reactions have been reported by patients taking strontium ranelate. The severe allergic reaction starts with a rash, fever, and swollen glands. Patients are advised to stop taking medication and immediately see their GP if skin rash develops. The treatment with strontium ranelate should not be restarted.
